Planning note
Choose a coastal base that fits the day
Makry Gialos and Ierapetra make different bases for eastern Crete. Compare the town, the beach and the transfer, not just the sea view.
A few things to keep in mind

Makry Gialos: keep the local name precise
Makry Gialos is also written Makrigialos or Makriyialos. Check the street address and map pin together so a spelling variation does not become a different destination. Compare the village and nearby coastal stays by their actual address.
Ierapetra: a town with a coastal setting
Compare a central town base with an address further along the coast. The practical choice depends on whether your plans favour town errands, the waterfront or drives into the surrounding area. Choose between a town base and properties farther along the coast.
Test the arrival before the itinerary
Put the actual arrival point beside the hotel address. Compare the luggage journey, check-in timing and any need to store bags. A beautiful district can still be the wrong base for an early departure.
Compare two addresses, not two photographs
Choose one hotel from each base and write down how you would spend an ordinary day from it. Compare the journeys, meals and return in the evening. Keep the room category and booking conditions beside that plan.
